WHEN SHOULD YOU LOSE WEIGHT?
The body weight is assessed by the Body Mass Index, also known as BMI, which is defined as the body mass divided by the square of the body height. It is universally expressed in units of kg/m2, resulting from mass in kilograms and height in metres.
BMI Categories:
Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5–24.9
Overweight = 25–29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater
You can calculate your BMI. Enter your height and weight below and click on the BMI box.
WHY SHOULD YOU LOSE WEIGHT?
There are a variety of reasons why you should lose weight if your BMI is above normal range (note: the closer you are to the upper part of the normal range, the more you should also think about shedding a few pounds).
There are medical reasons to maintain a healthy body weight. It is known that obesity or being overweight increase the risk of:
- type 2 diabetes
- coronary heart disease
- hypertension
- abnormal levels of blood lipids (also known as dyslipidemia)
- joint pain and osteoarthritis
- respiratory problems, including sleep apnea
- stroke
- gallbladder disease
- cancers of the uterus, colon, prostate and breast
Being overweight also globally increases mortality from all causes.
Besides medical reasons, maintaining a healthy body weight can help with self-image.
HOW SHOULD YOU LOSE WEIGHT?
Slowly. The ideal weight loss plan helps you lose weight steadily and gradually, without being hungry and while offering balanced nutrition. Every one of these elements is essential to ensure success and long-lasting (ideally everlasting) results.
Depending on your age, BMI, occupation, and health status, a diet plan can be combined with an exercise plan to increase metabolism and maintain muscle mass while losing fat deposits.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
- Weight gain in developed countries is often caused by unhealthy eating habits. However, other causes of weight gain such as hormonal imbalances (e.g. thyroid dysfunction) must be ruled out by a doctor before taking any action aimed at losing weight.
- Informing your medical practitioner and following up with him/her is recommended at regular intervals when trying to lose weight.
- Our materials have been developed with adults in mind. Overweight children and teenagers need to be assessed and closely monitored by a pediatrician for adequate attention and care.
- In addition, pregnant or breastfeeding women should always be closely supervised by their treating physician or gynaecologist if they wish to start losing weight.
- Morbidly obese patients should always obtain specialized help and guidance from a physician to ensure that their weight loss efforts are adequately monitored and that they do not put themselves at risk.
